Building software and AI tools for healthcare and real-world workflows
I'm Matteo, a Biomedical Engineer with a PhD in AI for Medicine. My work connects deep technical research (like generative models for medical imaging), with hands-on execution: taking a healthtech venture from discovery to MVP as technical co-founder.
I design and build end-to-end software centered on how people actually work. While I enjoy learning new domains, healthcare and medical AI remain my primary focus and commitment.
Currently building independent software and exploring healthcare problems worth committing to long term.
Selected work
Healthcare is where I have the deepest roots, across peer-reviewed AI research and venture building. That same philosophy guides my work across other fields: treat the domain as a system, uncover where the friction actually lives, and build the smallest software that delivers real leverage. Below is a transparent look at what I've built and where each project currently stands.

Sardinian, currently based in Sardinia. I speak Italian, English and Spanish.
I trained as a biomedical engineer: signals, images and the physics of the human body, plus the habit of asking whether a measurement means anything before building on top of it.
A BSc and an MSc in Biomedical Engineering, both with full marks (110/110, the MSc cum laude), and a PhD in Health and Technologies rated Excellent.
I'm naturally curious and I enjoy putting myself in situations where I have something new to learn. I've always enjoyed being the least experienced person in the room: working with people who know a domain better than I do, understanding how they think and gradually learning enough to contribute.
PhD & research focus
My PhD in Health and Technologies at the University of Bologna focused on generative models for medical imaging: brain MRI synthesis and reproducible ways to evaluate synthetic images.
More broadly, I worked on the constraints that make medical AI difficult in practice: small and biased datasets, privacy restrictions, and methods that need to hold up outside a benchmark.
PACGAN
A framework for high-resolution conditional MR image synthesis.
SIM Toolkit
An open-source Python package that brings synthetic-image evaluation metrics into one reproducible workflow, first introduced in the Journal of Imaging Informatics in Medicine.

Talks
I presented my research at IEEE ISBI 2024 in Athens and at Kenyatta University in Nairobi.
Some projects start with a brief. Others with curiosity, a group of friends, or a field in Sardinia. I like giving ideas a tangible form, even when the medium is unfamiliar.
A season growing legal hemp
During the last summer of my Master's, my brother, cousins and I took a crop from seedlings to harvest. I learned the domain as we went: irrigation and fertigation, fungi and pests, and the testing needed to stay within the legal THC limit.
From a deck of cards to a finished board game
A friend invented a game we used to play with standard playing cards. For his birthday, I proposed turning it into a complete board game, coordinated the project across our group and created much of the visual work, from the board and rulebook to the box and components.
Five periods abroad, each for a different reason: an English course in Brighton, research and my Master's thesis in Colchester, the visiting period of my PhD in Brno, a Spanish course in Valencia on a regional scholarship, and a month of solo travel across Costa Rica.
Every time, a new place and new people to learn from.
I care a lot about my work, but I also try to keep a good balance with sport and quality time with family and friends. During the week, that usually means the gym, beach volleyball, beach tennis or padel.
Weekends give me more room to get outdoors, explore somewhere new or try something I haven't done before. Most of the photos here come from days like those.
Let's build something useful.
My work connects research, engineering and product development, with healthcare as my deepest area of experience.
Have a workflow worth improving?
A workflow you know well, a software idea or a SaaS product taking shape. I'd be interested to understand the problem and what would make a useful first version.
Let's talk about itExploring a healthcare problem?
I've taken a healthtech venture from discovery to MVP as technical co-founder, and I'm actively looking for the next healthcare problem worth committing to. If you have first-hand access to one, I'd like to hear about it.
Let's build something togetherLooking for technical depth in Healthtech or AI?
I'm open to high-impact roles (Tech Lead, Founding Engineer, Applied AI Scientist) in teams that value the intersection of academic research rigor and pragmatic software shipping.
